Guide to Sleep Labs and their Function
Since most people are unaware of this craze, let me spend a brief time to explain what a sleep lab is.
Basically, it is a room where a clinician or technologist works with electronic electrodes which he attaches to a patient’s head, two on each leg, and two on the chest for the purpose of checking the heart rate. It also has two sensors in your nose monitoring airflow, a band around your chest and one around the abdomen, an oximeter which measure your blood oxygen on your finger and one your neck, a microphone to monitor sound.
The clinicians are studying your sleep and that is why all these contraptions are attached to your body. You may think that losing a few hours of sleep every night is not really a big deal, and after all, maybe you have been experiencing sleep loss for years. So, to the question, what is the big deal?
There are three sleep disorders that can cause you to feel tired most of the time. The causes of these sleeping disorders are many and there is a need to properly diagnose it so that the root can be treated or else it can lead to further disorders. There are various treatments to cure sleep disorder but this will all depend on the diagnosis. Some of the most common types of sleep disorder include insomnia, sleep apnea, narcolepsy, restless legs syndrome, parasomnias and snoring.
If you are going to a sleep study session, there are some things you need to do to prepare for it. It includes arriving with clean hair which means no hair sprays, oils, gels and etc. You need to prepare an overnight bag as if you would stay in a hotel. If you are used to having a snack before bedtime, then you can bring some snacks, but your caffeine should be limited to one cup in the morning and after two in the afternoon, you should stop taking it. You also have to avoid alcohol on the day of the study and be ready to spell out to your clinician if you are taking any medications. If you sleep well with a favorite pillow, then you are allowed to bring it along.
Another thing that you have to take note is that sleep in the center is never quite the same as sleeping at home. Falling asleep in the center may be difficult and you might not be able to sleep as soundly as you do at home, as some patients have reported. And the reason for this is due to the contraptions and monitoring devices attached to your body. But this does not really interfere with getting accurate information from your sleep study.
In order to overcome this consciousness, you should take your mind off these mechanisms and focus on bringing your body in a most comfortable position for sleeping, and in case you are not feeling comfortable, you should let the technician know about it because they can easily adjust the monitor positions.
